::Raleigh Wide Open 2 Was A Big Success By R.Gregg, Raleigh Chronicle Editor In Chief Photos By The Raleigh Chronicle Tuesday, July 24, 2007 RALEIGH - At the Raleigh Wide Open event on Saturday July 21st, great weather welcomed thousands of Raleigh citizens who flocked to the downtown area to enjoy food, music, exhibits, and fun events. Mayor Charles Meeker (top photo) also unveiled the refurbished Sir Walter Raleigh statue that will stand at the new convention center when finished. At the free concert that was headlined by Eddie Money [see related story] an estimated 50,000 Raleigh fans seemed to love the songs that he belted out including his string of 1980's hits like "Baby Hold On" and "Shakin'." The whole celebration was topped off by a great fireworks show that was sent up over the crowd, marking the end to a great evening in downtown Raleigh.
