RALEIGH - A local man came away with the top honors at a recent eating contest held at a popular bar in downtown Raleigh.
Earlier this month at the Borough Bar & Restaurant on West Morgan Street in downtown Raleigh, contestant Will Reynolds was able to down ten whole bacon, lettuce, and tomato (BLT) sandwiches in just seven minutes.
Reynolds has been a successful contender in many eating contests at the Borough, says one of the managers there, who identified herself only as Smitty.
"They're a lot of fun," said Smitty. "It's really funny to watch."
The Borough hosts an eating contest on the first Monday of every month at 8pm. The contests cost $5 to enter and all of the proceeds go towards charity.
She added that different people take the contests seriously, while others just enjoy eating as much as they can for $5.
"Some people will actually train," Smitty said.
She added that it's all in good fun and some of the contestants will try to play jokes on each other during the contests. Their friends also come along to join in the fun, cheering on their favorite contestants and taking pictures, she said.
A previous eating contest featured Krispy Kreme doughnuts as the food of choice.
"That was one of the more exciting ones," said Smitty.
The winner in that contest was able to scarf down 30 doughnuts.
The Borough is a popular bar that opened last year on the ground level of the Dawson on Morgan condominium complex at 317 West Morgan St. in Raleigh and has outdoor seating on the corner.
The cozy upscale bar is open from 4pm to 2am and is one of the few establishments in downtown Raleigh that serves food late (until they close) and as a result, has been very popular with many of the new downtown residents in the area. ::
