::Cary Opens $11 Million Baseball Field
From Raleigh Chronicle Staff Reports Friday June 29, 2007
CARY - The Town of Cary has opened an impressive new $11 million baseball park that will be the new home of USA Baseball, which selects and trains the national baseball that competes in the Olympics as well as other national youth teams that represent America in games abroad.
Just opened last week, the baseball park will hold exhibition and training games for USA Baseball and has been built to major league baseball standards.
The large training complex is located inside the 221 acre Thomas Brooks Park and includes four regular baseball fields, a stadium field and three training fields.
The lighted stadium field has been built to AAA baseball standards and has seating for 1,754 people and additional grass seating for around 250 people, says the town.
"This has been our vision of 'home' for the past 5 years, and we can not begin to express our gratitude to the Town of Cary and Wake County for their support making the vision a reality," said USA Baseball Executive Director Paul Seiler in a statement to the media.
Seiler described the facility as "incredible" and the new facility was key in bringing USA Baseball to Cary from Joplin, Missouri where they have been hosting games for the last six years.
According to the Town of Cary, the total construction costs for the complex were $11,024,691 with $1 million in funding being provided by county hotel and restaurant tax.
"I have no doubt that baseball players, coaches, fans, and families throughout the nation join me and the rest of Cary in celebrating the opening of this first-class facility," said Cary Mayor Ernie McAlister in a statement to the media.
"The USA Baseball organization has been a great group to work with and hosting them in Cary is already boosting our area's employment opportunities, increasing tourism dollars for the region, and promoting the outstanding quality of life that Cary offers its citizens," Mayor McAlister added.
The facility just hosted the USA Baseball Tournament of Stars, which drew many major league baseball scouts. In addition, the USA Baseball National Team will host the Japan Collegiate All-Stars for five games beginning on July 4th at the Durham Bulls Athletic Park in Durham.
The Town of Cary also says that later this year, the USA Baseball National Team (collegiate level), USA Baseball Youth National (16 and up), the USA Baseball (14 and up) National Team and the USA Baseball Women's National Team will all hold events at the new Cary complex.
The complex was designed by architects Heery International and was built by contractor TA Loving of Raleigh, says the town. ::
