::NCSU Relaxes Fall Tailgating Rules From Raleigh Chronicle Staff & Wire Reports Tuesday June 19, 2007 RALEIGH - After widespread complaints from alumni and other football game fans that everyone was being punished for the criminal acts of a few people, North Carolina State University has somewhat relaxed the draconian set of rules that it implemented for home football games at Carter-Finley Stadium last year. The strict rules were implemented after a shooting death that was fueled by alcohol and a brawl in the parking lot at Carter-Finley Stadium during an NCSU game. Although the rules requiring everyone -- including children -- to carry some form of picture identification on them at all times is still in effect, a couple of other rules have been relaxed. --More time for tailgating: The parking lots at Carter-Finley Stadium will be opened one hour earlier starting this fall. The new times will allow five hours of tailgating instead of only four, which many complained was too short a time. --No flame retardant tents: The requirement for flame retardant tents was nixed, since hardly any one actually sold tents that are used for football games that were made with flame retardant materials. In fact, even the tents sold with the official NC State logos on the official NC State website in the past were not in compliance with this rule. --"Ambassadors" program: A so-called football game "ambassadors" program has been implemented, although it's not quite clear how the program will affect non-students since the school mentioned that it is designed to teach incoming students about the dangers of alcohol. --Fans can still leave/return to game: One privilege allowed in 2006 that NCSU Chancellor James Oblinger had looked at eliminating this year was the ability of fans to leave the stadium at half-time to eat in their tailgate areas and then return to the game. However, since this was a long-standing tradition and many alumni were ready to complain if this ability to leave and re-enter was taken away, it evidently was taken off the table. Fans can still come back in the stadium as long as they have a ticket stub. Other Rules In Effect Old rules that are still in effect for each football game include: --Carry Identification Papers Rule This rule enacted in 2006 requires that all fans carry a picture identification in accordance with new university regulations. According to an article in the Technician student newspaper last summer, all visitors at games and even on campus now must present an ID upon request to university police or face possible arrest for trespassing. --No Kegs There will continue to be a prohibition of beer kegs in any stadium parking areas including vendor or university-sanctioned events. --Noise And Music The school says it will establish and enforce listening levels for music. . --Tent Monitoring The school says it will require that tents remain contained within the allocated parking area of a tailgating group. --Trash The school also says it encourages tailgaters to bag their own trash and leave it in their parking area. :: [ home ] |
