::Redbird Sculpture Dedicated On Sunday By Raleigh Chronicle News Editor Elliott West With Author Chris At Raleighing.com Sunday June 10, 2007 RALEIGH - The "Redbird" sculpture that was recently installed in Fred Fletcher Park just off of Glenwood Avenue in Raleigh was dedicated by Mayor Charles Meeker this afternoon. The tall metal sculpture sits on the grassy knoll by the park's basketball and tennis courts on the corner of Glenwood Avenue and Washington Street. Fletcher park is known for its wide ranging plantings of blooming flowers that seem to explode in color and the "Redbird" sculpture seems to be an appropriate addition to the park with its bright flower-like forms. According a member of the Raleigh Arts Council at the scene on Sunday, the sculpture was installed about a month ago at the location. He mentioned that the placement of the new sculpture in Fletcher Park has been the culmination of two years' work in trying to find a home for the beautiful work of art. "Redbird" was created by Asheville artist Harry McDaniel. While viewed from one direction it looks like a grouping of giant abstract flowers, when viewed from another angle the red shapes form a cardinal in flight, honoring North Carolina's state bird. The funds for the sculpture came from the money generated by the Red Wolf Ramble project, which placed over 100 red wolf sculptures throughout Raleigh. The project raised money for future art projects in Raleigh such as the Redbird sculpture through sponsorships. :: [ home ] |
