::Take Me Out To The Ball Game From Raleigh Chronicle Staff And Wire Reports Monday, June 4, 2007
DURHAM -- One great past-time during summer in America is taking in a ballgame on a beautiful warm night. We recently visited the Durham Bulls Athletic Park in downtown Durham to enjoy a game between the Bulls and the Louisville, Kentucky Mud Cats.
Not only were fans treated to a stunning win due to a Durham Bulls homerun in the last inning, but they were able to enjoy a fireworks display after the show.
Many fans were there to see Josh Hamilton of the Cincinnati Reds, who was temporarily playing for the Mudcats while on the injury roster. Hamilton is an outstanding player who grew up in Raleigh and played for Athens Drive High School before playing professionally in minor leagues. (See photos of Hamilton below in the black shirt, signing a young fan's uniform and a baseball).
Hamilton was named the Rookie of the Month in the National League in April. True to form, Hamilton signed autographs after the game for anyone that wanted one -- and there was a long line of fans waiting to meet their hero.
This season, fans at the Durham Park have been able to see some big new changes at the park. The left field fence has been transformed into a video area with several video screens visible below the famous bull that belches smoke and lights up his eyes during a home run.
In addition, construction on the Diamond View II section behind the ballpark has started and steel girders already have gone up above left and center fields.
On the weekends, the Durham Bulls also plan to continue to have fireworks displays after the games, so check out the baseball team's website for more details. ::
