::Alive After Five Cancelled In Raleigh By Raleigh Chronicle Staff And Wire Reports Wednesday, May 30, 2007 RALEIGH -- According to one source who spoke with the organizers of the popular Alive After Five summer gatherings about being a sponsor, the event is pretty much dead for 2007. No planned events have been announced and it seems evident from the source and from the lack of announcements from organizer WRAL-FM 101.5, that the Alive After Five Thursday events have all been cancelled. The event was one of the largest public gatherings in Raleigh for many years and the outdoor music evening events drew literally thousands of people to downtown Raleigh after work, hence the name "Alive After Five." However, last year, the series suffered in attendance for various reasons. The event changed locations and due to construction on the street was moved from the larger Fayetteville Street downtown venue to a much less welcoming sloping side street under a railroad trestle just off of Glenwood Avenue next to Bogart's and High Five. The downhill grade of the narrow street was not exactly conducive to large crowds. In addition, one big change last year was the addition of a rope around the event, meaning that people had to "check-in" and show identification before attending even if they weren't drinking. During previous Alive After Five events downtown, people could come and go as they pleased without any restrictions. In addition, organizers last year ended the long-standing practice of allowing people to bring in coolers that contained their own beer. The cooler policy was one of the reasons that the event was so popular, since it set it apart from other events. Last year at the Alive After Five events, attendees were forced to buy their beer from a couple of stands inside ropes.
