::Progress Energy Tears Down Block From Raleigh Chronicle Staff & Wire Reports Thursday May 10, 2007 RALEIGH - Progress Energy, which is headquartered in Raleigh, tore down some of the last remaining structures on the block of property it owns across the street from its current offices. The block, which is bordered by Blount Street near Moore Square and Wilmington Street, will be the location of a new structure being built by Progress Energy which will include another parking deck for the area. Progress Energy owns almost the entire block and has been trying to buy out the remaining landowners. According to a downtown official who did not wish to be quoted directly, Progress Energy has made offers on some properties successfully, but some older businesses have refused to sell so far. The buildings that were recently torn down included an old feed and seed building which fronted at 325 Wilmington Street (see bottom photo) that had been used since the early 1900's but had been owned by Progress Energy in recent years. A worker at the site said that an elderly gentleman commented that he remembered when people rode into town to buy their feed for their farms at the store. Another building that served as a storage garage on Blount Street was also torn down. The downtown area is seeing a large number of multistory construction projects being planned for next few years including the RBC Centura Bank Tower, the Lafayette Hotel, and the new Raleigh Convention Center and Marriott Hotel. :: [ home ] |
