Triangle Photogs Win Major NC Press Awards From Staff And Wire Reports Wednesday, February 28, 2007 RALEIGH - Last Thursday night, during the NC Press Association's Awards Dinner at the North Raleigh Hilton Hotel on Wake Forest Road, two Triangle photographers were honored for their work in journalism. Michael McLoone of The Herald newspaper in Smithfield, NC and Ted Richardson of The News & Observer were given the two highest awards given in the field of photography by the NC Press Association, the prestigious Hugh Morton Award. Named after famed photographer and owner of Grandfather Mountain who passed away last year, the award is above and beyond the normal press association awards for photography. On hand for the ceremony was Crae Morton, the grandson of Hugh Morton, who said that his father was a journalist at heart and that if he didn't own Grandfather Mountain, he would have been working in the newspaper business. Each photographer in the competition submitted 10 photographs for review by the judges. Both winners were given their award personally by Crae Morton in front of the crowd of over 500 journalists on hand for the awards dinner. For daily newspapers, Ted Richardson won the award for The News & Observer in Raleigh. His award-winning work is featured prominently in the newspaper on a regular basis and on their website. He has worked on several photo essays for the N&O, including one on religion that won praise for the paper. The community newspaper award was won by Michael McLoone, staff photographer at The Herald in Smithfield, NC. McLoone has been a newspaper photographer for over 15 years and has worked at daily newspapers in Minnesota and Florida before starting work at The Herald four years ago.
