Council Votes For Two Roundabout Plan On Street

RALEIGH -  On Tuesday, the Raleigh City Council voted to approve funding to come up with final plans that will make changes to Hillsborough Street in front of North Carolina State University.

The plan that the city council requested to be fleshed out is vastly scaled back from earlier proposals put forth by the Hillsborough Street Partnership.  The requested plan will include only two roundabouts -- at the intersections of Hillsborough Street and Pullen Road and also a smaller one at the intersection of Oberlin Road and Groveland Avenue.

Previous designs put forth had included as many as seven roundabouts at a cost estimated to be somewhere around $3 million apiece.

The roundabouts have been somewhat controversial because of their cost and questionable ability to handle traffic on the street.  Even proponents of the roundabouts say in past proposal documents that the roundabouts will move traffic more slowly than regular traffic lights.

The other parts of the plan which were less controversial and seem to be generally accepted will be a pedestrian median that will run on Hillsborough Street from Gardner Street to Oberlin Road and also the burying of power and phone lines underground.

A final plan will be present to the Raleigh City Council at a later date and they will have to grant formal approval before the project can proceed.

The final design is being performed by Kinley Horn and Associates Inc. of Chesapeake, Virginia.  ::
